Poker Terms & Jargon
- aggressive
 - calling infrequently, preferring to raise or fold
- backdoor
 - a hand, such as a straight or a flush, that a player
needs two more cards to complete
- BB
 - 1.the big
blind 2. a big bet
- big bet
 - in Limit Hold'em, the size of bets made on the river
and the turn. Typically, the big bet is twice the size of the small
bet.
- blind
 - 1. a forced bet, placed
before any cards are dealt 2. a player
required to make a blind bet
- brick and mortar
 - a physical poker room (as opposed to an
online one)
- burn card
 - a card dealt face down and set aside before dealing
other cards. The burn card makes it more difficult to cheat by
marking the backside of cards. Burn cards are not used on-line play,
as it's impossible to cheat in that way.
- button
 - 1.the player dealing this
hand 2. a physical button indicating the
current dealer
- calling station
 - a loose and very passive player who almost
always calls
- check-raise
 - checking to wait for another player to bet, then
raising within the same round
- the face up cards in Hold'em that all players
share
- continuation bet
 - an opening bet made by the player who put in
the last raise in the previous betting round
- cutoff
 - the player immediately to the right of the button
- CO
 - see: cutoff
- dominated
 - a hand that has few ways to beat the opponent's
hand. For example, J
J is a good starting hand, but it's
dominated by Q Q .
- fallacy
 - an argument that at first glance may appear logical,
but contains a critical flaw
- fish
 - a weak player
- flop
 - in Hold'em, the three community cards dealt face-up after
the first round of betting is complete
- hole
 - cards dealt face-down to a player
- implied odds
 - the ratio of the expected final size of the pot
to the cost of a call. For example, if a player with 6
6 expects
to win $100 when he flops a set and calling costs $5, then the implied
odds are $100-to-$5 or 20-to-1.
- limp
 - calling pre-flop in an un-raised pot
- loose
 - playing too many hands and folding too few
- monster
 - an exceptionally strong hand
- nuts
 - the best possible hand, in light of the community cards
- off-suit
 - hole cards of different suits, such as T

- overcard
 - a face-down card that is higher than any of the
community cards
- passive
 - calling most hands, rather than folding or raising
- pocket rockets
 - two aces in the hole
- pot odds
 - the ratio of the size of the pot to the cost of a
call. For example, if the pot is $50 and calling costs $5, then the
pot odds are $50-to-$5 or 10-to-1.
- reading
 - inferring information about an opponent's hand using
tells
- river
 - in Hold'em, the community card dealt face-up after the
third round of betting is complete
- runner-runner
 - see: backdoor
- set
 - three of a kind, when two of the cards are hidden and one
of them is exposed
- showdown
 - the end of a hand of poker, where the remaining
players reveal their cards and the winner is determined
- slow playing
 - playing a great hand as if it were a weak hand in
the hopes of getting other players to bet rather than fold
- small bet
 - in Limit Hold'em, the size of bets made pre-flop and
on the flop. Typically, the small bet is half the size of the big
bet.
- strategy
 - an overall plan to win money at the poker table
- suited
 - hole cards of the same suit, such as T

- tactics
 - a method for extracting value in a particular hand
- tell
 - an indicator, such as a nervous twitch or particular
grin, that gives you partial information about an opponent's cards
- tight
 - typically playing only premium hands; folding most other
hands
- tilt
 - a heightened, often agitated, emotional state causing a
player to make more mistakes than usual
- trips
 - three of a kind, when one of the cards are hidden and
two of them are exposed
- turn
 - in Hold'em, the community card dealt face-up after the
second round of betting is complete
- under the gun
 - the first player after the big blind
- UTG
 - see: under the gun
- wild
 - 1. making many raises, even
with poor hands 2. a card (such as a
joker) that can take on the value of any other card
